Are there schools in Baldwin-Whitehall that still offer a half day of kindergarten?
You people that have kids should pay. The rest of us shouldnt have to pay for your kids cause you want a full time babysitter
I am curious, why do think Kindergarten is used as a baby sitting service? Kindergarten is not playtime anymore. I have three children that have gone to St. Germaine School for kindergarten(and beyond) and it is packed with a rigorous curriculum. Once first grade rolls around my kids are compeletely ready to pay full attention, all day long. That is due to the preparation kindergarten gave them. I think the option for half day needs to be available, too. Parents deserve to have educational choices! St. Germaine is merging with Nativity school for the next school year, it is an exciting time for all! St. Katharine Drexel School (the product of the merger) will offer half and full day programs.

Here we go again. Make the parents pay. Let me tell you something, just because your kids are grown and no longer in school does'nt mean you no longer have to pay to educate our children. They are the future and if you own a home you should have to pay school taxes. Period. I had to pay school taxes as soon as I bought my home, and I didn't have any kids for years. Everybody needs to chip in and support the schools and the education of our kids, and if you don't like it too bad. Go rent.
With the ever higher cost of educating children, and with all the special things that parents are demanding for their kids today (such as smaller classes, more teachers, higher paid teachers, expensive buildings, artificial turfs at all fields, sports programs, highly paid coaches, limitless coaching staffs, etc., etc.), 2timevet has a point. While you bring out the old saw of it being society's responsibility to educate children, it has become much too expensive to afford what parents now seem to want from a school district. I think it is high time for a compromise to end the madness. People without children in the district should receive a large tax forgiveness on their property taxes. Perhaps as much as 50%. That is a win-win situation. The childless would continue to pay towards their "social responsibility," just not the excessive amount that they pay today. After adding up the revenue, the school district could then assess the parents utilizing the school district services for the additional money required.
St. Katharine Drexel School, the product of an exciting merger between Nativity and St. Germaine Schools, offers half day and full day Kindergarten programs for the school year 2008-2009. St. Katharine Drexel School is located at the corner of Baptist and Horning roads, on the edge of the Baldwin-Whithall border, in Bethel Park. Busing through Baldwin-Whitehall school district IS available for those residing in the district boundaries! For more information, please call 412-833-0223 or 412-653-1500.
If you live in Baldwin/Whitehall, they do bus there as well.
Kindergarten is definitely not what it was when I was there a long time ago. My son is now in 2nd grade and got more homework in Kindergarten than he gets now. I like that they offer a choice - he was always very mature for his age and it was appropriate for him.
And no, I did NOT use kindergarten as a babysitting service. And even if I did, so what! They are MY tax dollars/tuition!
I wasn't sure about all day kindergarten, but I am amazed at what my daughter has learned. The have a very full day and home that gives the children a firm foundation to build on. The comment about using it for a baby sitting service is just foolish. A good school district is one of the big factors in choosing an area to live.
As a parent, I chose not to send my daughter to full day kindergarten. It is all that Brentwood offered and I am glad that I made that decision. She is now in 1st grade and doing just as well or even better than those who attended the all day program. It is purely a matter of choice. Children in full day kindergarten do not learn more, but just get a reinforcement of what the half day gets. It all depends on how your child learns. Some kids are not ready for an all day step at 5 years old and some parents actually want another year to spend time with their children. Full day should be an option for all school districts.
