Community Opinion of Brentwood Schools

As a parent in the Brentwood District I am wondering how other parents feel about our school district? About the lack of sports offered? About the curriculum? and other school related topics...I am considering sending my child to another school, but wanted to research local opinions first.

I think the school should offer more sports. But how can they when we have a stadium that is not being used at full capacity. By this I mean the track and the many updates that are needed. Imagine how much revenue could be brought into this borough by hosting WPIAL tournaments and events. I understand that Baldwin is being reprimanded for how their football field looks and that the WPIAL is saying it needs fixed before use. Is this true? If so, how are we allowed to still be using ours with the way it looks. What would happen if the borough would ever decide to sell the stadium to a developer? Food for thought.

As for the school curriculum: I like the curriculum. What I don't like is how they pay so much attention to preparing the students for those PSSA tests. But, again, it's all about money.

I have a son at Elroy and a son in the middle schools and i love our schools. I think we have a well rounded curriculum and very deicated teachers.

Yes we teach a lot to the PSSA but i chalange you to find a school that doesn't

Brentwood has plenty of Sports. When you go to school, you are going to grow your brain. Sports has become almost a pseudo-religion, especially in Western PA.

Brentwood offers a very nice palate of sports for their children. And the sports it doesn't offer are available through community groups like the BAA and the Brentwood Soccer group (apologies, I forgot it's correct name).

I can't understand why there is such an emphasis on sports. Someone mentioned that it offers an avenue for scholarships. Well, true, but so does good academic performance. There is also the social aspect as well as contributing to good health (provided they don't get injured as is often the case in Football and Soccer).

The thing that is really lacking is a concerted effort to help the academically challenged in a meaningful way. Not by ostracizing them by labeling them as "special need"! Not by shuttling them off to some sports program! Focussing the creative energies that ever student has toward academic excellence.

We should not be focussing on sports, but academics, the arts, music, history, the English language and literatrue. Everthing else is contingent upon executing these basics successfully, including Sports.
